Our material

Why made-to-order wrought iron, not a retail set

A fireplace tool set stays near the fire for the whole heating season: material and finish matter as much as shape. Solid wrought iron holds up better to daily, intensive use — repositioning logs, stirring embers — than thin steel pressed in series, which bends more easily over time. Made to order, each piece is also sized for your actual fireplace rather than sold in one size: stand height, tool length, piece count and finish are all confirmed in your quote.

This approach has an honest trade-off: a hand-forged set costs more than an entry-level model, and the manufacturing lead time (4 to 6 weeks on average) is longer than a store purchase. In exchange, you get a piece designed for your installation and a finish chosen deliberately rather than by default.

Each set is forged by hand, piece by piece, rather than mass-produced — which allows adjusting a detail (stand height, a more or less ornate style) without starting from a standard mould. That's also what explains the lead time: the forging time for a made-to-order piece isn't that of an industrial stamping line.

Configurations

3, 4 or 5 pieces

There's no official rule on how many pieces a fireplace tool set should have — it's a commercial convention, not a standard. Here's what the three most common configurations cover.

Tongs, shovel, brush

3 pieces

The poker is traditionally less common than the other two in modern households.

+ Poker

4 pieces

The most common configuration in retail.

+ Ash bucket

5 pieces

For intensive use or a large hearth.

Composition

What each tool is for

Each piece comes into play at a different point in the fire's life cycle, from the first gesture to the last.

1

Poker

Stirs the fire and repositions logs in the embers.

2

Tongs

Move a log or ember without bringing a hand near the flame.

3

Shovel

Removes cooled ash once the fire is out.

4

Brush

Sweeps the hearth after the shovel.

What size should a fireplace tool set be

Retail sets are most often between 60 and 75cm of stand height, with individual tools 50 to 75cm long — reference points observed on real models (an entry-level set is often around 20 × 20 × 65cm for 4kg, a fuller 5-piece model can reach 66 × 23cm at the base with 72cm tools), not an official rule tied to your fireplace's size. Made to order, these dimensions are confirmed in your quote based on your installation and use.

Solid wrought iron or coated steel

Most sets sold at DIY retailers are thin steel, sometimes coated with a high-temperature paint capped around 200°C — fine for a part that gets warm by radiation, not for a tip plunged into embers. A flue-rated paint, formulated for stoves and flues, tolerates up to 600°C; raw blackened, oiled and waxed steel simply has no paint film to blister in the first place. That's what structurally sets a made-to-order forged set apart from an entry-level model — not just the price.

Market reference: entry-level sets (4 or 5 pieces, thin steel) run around €35 to €50 at DIY retailers; named references like the Dixneuf Brio (€44.90), the Le Marquier Elaia (€71.90) or the Devaux Atole (€99.90) illustrate this segment — not this workshop's prices, see our full pricing grid.
How much does a wrought-iron fireplace tool set cost? From €180 for a 3-piece set to over €450 for a 5-piece configuration.

Frequently asked questions

What we get asked most often

Why is this site called "garniture de cheminée"?

French dictionaries reserve that term for decorative mantel objects (clock, vases) — retailers instead call this product a "serviteur de cheminée" (some also say "valet de cheminée"). We use these names interchangeably; see our dedicated article on this nuance.

How many pieces does a fireplace tool set have?

Most often 4 (shovel, tongs, poker, brush) on a stand. 3-piece (no brush) or 5-piece (with ash bucket) versions also exist depending on your needs — see the three configurations above.

How long between order and delivery?

Generally 4 to 6 weeks between quote confirmation and delivery, depending on the workshop's schedule and the chosen finish.

Does any standard govern this kind of product?

No — there is no French NF standard specific to fireplace tools. The NF DTU 24.1/24.2 and NF EN 13229 standards govern flue construction and heating appliances (inserts, stoves), not the shovel, tongs, poker or brush.

Does the workshop deliver outside mainland France?

The stated service area is mainland France. For a project elsewhere, describe it in your quote request — the workshop will tell you if it's possible.

Can I order an antique-style model?

Yes, as a new reproduction (forged scrollwork, blackened finish) — see our antique-style fireplace tool set page, which distinguishes this option from a genuinely old secondhand piece.

What should I prepare before requesting a quote?

The number of pieces you want (3, 4 or 5), the finish you're considering and, if possible, the space available near your fireplace — the more precise these details, the closer the first estimate will be to the final price.
